Our Technology Driven World. How does this affect our HEALTH?

In the world where technology is rapidly rising, health and wellness must have been taken for granted by many of us. Free times are spent mostly at home by watching the television or DVD movies, surfing the internet which can now be done anywhere using your wi-fi capable phone, or just spend the time playing popular electronic games like PC games, portable Playstation (PSP), Nintendo DS, etc, and of course, this present lifestyle comes with the popularity of convenience foods like chips, popcorn, pizza, fast-food deliveries, and other easy to prepare processed foods.

Maybe some will ask, what must be the connection between this so-called technology-era and health and wellness? How can you say that wellness is being taken for granted?

Well, the best answer would be the high risk of having LIFESTYLE DISEASE.

What is lifestyle disease?
  • Lifestyle disease is a disease associated with the way a person or group of people lives. This includes Type II Diabetes Mellitus, heart diseases, obesity, stroke, and Cancer. (Source: MedicineNet.com)
According to the result of the 2008 7th National Nutrition Survey of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), the prevalence of overweight among children (0 to 5 years old & 6 to 10 years old) are 2% and 1.6% compared to the 2003 6th NNS result of 1.6 % and 1.3 % respectively.

This alone can be an eye opener to every one of us. Today, not only the adults are at risk of having lifestyle disease but also the children. Based from the article of Dr. Francine RatnerKaufma,MD of the American Dietetic Association, she stated there that: "Type 2 diabetes has changed from a disease of our grandparents and parents to a disease of our children". (Source: http://clinical.diabetesjournals.org/content/20/4/217.full)

We don't need to be a gym-buff or gym-addict just to loose weight and have a toner body. Actually, we can do exercise while at home. It is also much better if we do exercise with a friend or a family member. The only thing we need to remember is that, we should not be a couch-potato all the time. We can still use our gadgets but not too much. We must eat healthy in a way that it should be moderate and balanced. We should all have the discipline and remember that everything has its limitations.

So, turn-off that TV and enough with that too long series and invite someone to work-out with you and live that HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!
